Promo: Finals Week Early Dining HoursMake sure to eat to fuel your study sessions and test-taking.  Your brain needs food to perform best.

What are some healthy pre-exam breakfasts available in Dining restaurants?
  • yogurt with chopped fruit and a cereal mixed in
  • hot slow-cooked oatmeal with raisins
  • scrambled eggs with salsa on top, toasted whole wheat bread and an orange
Short on time and running in-and-out of Place & Market on your way to your exam? Try:
  • Amy's oatmeal bowl or breakfast burrito
  • Kashi bar or Lara bar
  • Hospitality Express fruit and cheese box (in the refrigerated cases)
  • yogurt cup (my current faves are the Greek-style yogurts)

Best of luck on your exams!

The Importance of Being Well Fed

Dining Services locations will be open at 7am from Dec 5-9th for Early Bird breakfast hours. You should eat prior to taking your early morning finals -

If you're not convinced, check out this article:
Does Eating Breakfast Affect the Performance of College Students on Biology Exams? Gregory W. Phillips at Blinn College

Ok, I know, it's finals week and the last thing you want to do is read an article that won't be on your test! So here is the gist: in this study, the college students who ate breakfast had a higher pass rate than those who did not eat breakfast.

Booyah.

EAT BREAKFAST!

Good luck on your finals!

Finals Time - Fuel Your Brain!

The end is near - you're almost done with this academic year. There are only a few days of finals left. Remember that eating well and having healthy study habits can help your academic performance.

  • don't skip meals

  • don't overload on caffeine to stay awake

  • if you're tired, sleep. Adequate sleep through the night is important and naps are good too!

  • take study breaks for snacks and meals - don't eat while studying because the distraction could cause you to overeat, then you might feel overly full and uncomfortable

  • stay hydrated with plenty of water

  • take walks, ride your bike, go to the gym - exercise will help you manage your finals-related stress

Good luck on your exams! Remember that the Dining restaurants are open for you to have meals from 7a-8p and the Places & Markets are open from 7a-1a.

It's Finals Week - Stay Healthy!

It's FINALS WEEK!!!!!

I've spoken with several students today and here are some excerpts from what they shared with me about their Finals Week experience:

  • "I didn't sleep at all last night"
  • "Sometimes I study so much, I forget to eat"
  • "When I'm stressed out, I eat greasy food"

Whereas you might not be surprised by these comments, they do highlight some of the ways that college students put themselves at increased risk for poor performance and/or illness during exam time.

What can you do to help with the stress of Finals Week?

  • Eat regularly - don't skip meals! Your schedule this week may be different from class weeks but make sure you don't go too long without eating something.
  • Sleep!!!! I know that this is one recommendation with which college students find it very difficult to comply.
  • Eat healthy meals (like LiveWell meals!), fruits, vegetables
  • Stay hydrated - water, milk, 100% juice, tea
  • Practice deep breathing - try to relax
  • Exercise - a great stress reliever

The Sun Sets on Fall Quarter!

Well, it's finals week!

Here are some exam time eating tips to help you get through the stress of finals:
  • eat regularly (about every 4-5 hours) Don't skip meals even during marathon study sessions.
  • take breaks for meals and snacks. Get up from your studies. Don't snack while studying - you'll be distracted and might just snack because you are stressed.
  • Don't overload on caffeine to stay awake. Go to sleep! Well-rested students perform better on tests.

Good luck on your finals!

Don't forget the fruit!

Well, today is the last day of classes for Fall quarter. That means:
FINALS ARE HERE!

When studying, don't forget the fruit.

Fruits are healthy, quick, convenient snacks that you can eat anytime.

Stop by a Dining restaurant or Place & Market to pick up a piece or two of fruit today. The picture to the right is a banana that I got from Plaza Cafe and a tangerine from Roger's Place & Market.

For Finals: Aim for Healthy Beverages!

Aim for healthy beverages such as water, soymilk, fat free milk and even lowfat chocolate milk to keep you hydrated and nourished during your study sessions.

Avoid increasing your intake of caffeine this week. Try to keep it consistent so that you avoid headaches and sleep disturbances.
