Chocolate Milk: Slick Marketing or Good Post-Workout Snack?

Chocolate milk is getting a lot of press lately for being a good post-workout recovery drink.  The Milk Processor Education Program, the group responsible for the Got Milk? campaign, has a new campaign to promote chocolate milk to adults. You can see the ad on the USAToday news article about this topic here.

College students often ask me whether chocolate milk is "good" for them. The answer is not a clear-cut yes or no.  If you dislike plain, fat-free or lowfat milk and would never drink it and are of normal weight, then I'd recommend chocolate milk to you in order to get some great nutrition (vitamin D, calcium, protein.)  However, I would not recommend chocolate milk as a regular drink to everyone because it is a sugar-sweetened beverage with more calories than most people need to consume from a beverage.  I tend to agree with most of what Marion Nestle says about nutrition topics and I agree with her on the chocolate-milk-as-an-exercise-recovery-meal debate. Instead of drinking your calories, eat something!

College-friendly After Exercise Meals:
  • bowl of healthy cereal with milk (there! I used milk, not chocolate milk, in this example!)
  • fruit smoothie (example: yogurt, berries, orange juice)
  • sandwich (example: whole grain bread, turkey, lettuce, tomato)
  • pasta with marinara or meat sauce
  • burrito or burrito bowl with rice (like at Goody's)
  • pizza bagel (easy-to-make even in your campus apartment)
  • peanut butter and jelly sandwich with....MILK!
Have a great weekend! Exercise today - it's gorgeous outside!

Produce Patch a-Plenty!

Check out Goody's beautiful Produce Patch in the market (downstairs level.) If you are looking for healthy snacks and sides, look no further than the Produce Patch! There are many choices for fruits and vegetables. You can eat these in your Res Hall room or cook some of them up in your apartment.
Few of us eat the recommended number of servings of fruits and veggies per day (~5-9!) but the Produce Patch makes it a little easier. Stop by Goody's or another Place & Market to pick up some fresh produce anytime.

Mmmm, good at Goody's

Goody's burritos are AWESOME but there are other choices from this restaurant, including the Grilled Veggies sandwich pictured at right.

This sandwich is vegetarian if you choose the one with cheese. If you are vegan, feel free to order this sandwich "without cheese." Also feel free to request a different bread.

There are many ways to get your daily vegetables and having a sandwich piled high with veggies is a good one! ...or should I say a "Goody's one!?"

Goody's Goodies

I met a friend from the Wellness Center (http://wellness.ucsd.edu/ ) for lunch at Goody's Place today. Chef Vaughn (Dining Services' executive chef) also joined us. The 3 of us talked about vegan and vegetarian eating on campus while munching on some delicious Goody's food.

Here is a photo of my lunch: a burrito bowl with cilantro rice, pinto beans, lettuce, guacamole, fajita vegetables, cheese, tomato salsa and fire-roasted salsa. My choice today was vegetarian. If you prefer a vegan option, you could order this same bowl just without the cheese.

Goody's Grab It and Go!

Goody's restaurant on Marshall College has some great sandwiches that you can grab on your way to or from class. I really enjoy the carved turkey sandwiches (pictured at right) and the roasted vegetable sandwiches.

On a nice day it's fun to enjoy your Goody's meal out on the patio with friends. There is even some great people-watching from this location on Ridgewalk.

Also check out Goody's Market on the lower level to get some groceries, treats or supplies.

Happy St Patty's Day!

Ah, the humble potato. A medium potato has about 160 calories, 0g fat, 37g carbs, 4g fiber, 4g protein and is a good source of vitamin C and potassium.

Here are 3 different varieties of potatoes from the Produce Patch at Foodworx (Sixth College.) The larger varieties are only $0.95 each and the smaller ones are 5 for $1.00.

If you're looking for some recipes using potatoes, check out Food Network's recipe site: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes-and-cooking/index.html

Check out potatoes and more at today's Farm2U from 3:30-6:30p at Goody's Place & Market (Marshall College.)

Produce Patch = Fresh Fruit & Veggies

Though many nutrition fads and myths abound and some "facts" can be argued, there is a nutrition recommendation that is not debated: Fruits and Vegetables are great for you! Most college students eat too few fruits and vegetables.

Dining Services serves fruits and vegetables in all its restaurants. You can also get fresh fruit and veggies from the traveling Farm2U (farmer's market) and the Produce Patches in
the Places & Markets:

  • Goody's (pictured) on TMC
  • Foodworx on Sixth College
  • Roger's on Revelle College
  • Earl's on Warren College
  • The Village on ERC

Aim for 5-9 servings of fruits/vegetables everyday.
