Special Events in Dining this April

Happy Spring!

Check out the Special Events for April in your favorite Dining restaurants: http://hdh.ucsd.edu/diningservices/events.pdf

There are a lot of healthy special events, including a week of organic meals during Earth Week (April 18th-22nd) and World Health Day (April 7th).

As the weather warms up this spring, remember to stay hydrated. Carry water with you to class and drink before, during and after exercise to replace what you have lost in sweat.

Remember to use the convenient hydration stations inside all the Dining restaurants or pick up a drink at your nearest Place & Market.

What are good beverages to consume regularly?

  • water

  • sparkling water with a fresh fruit slice

  • 100% juice (in moderation)

  • unsweetened tea

Happy St Patrick's Day! Join us for Corned Beef and Cabbage.

In honor of St Patty's day today, Dining Services will be serving Corned Beef and Cabbage with 2 sides for $6.50.
Did you know that Corned Beef and Cabbage is more an Irish-American tradition and not really found much in Ireland? The substitution was likely made by Irish immigrants due to the higher cost of the more traditional pork product as compared to the corned beef.
Wear your green and come de-stress from Finals with some Corned Beef and Cabbage!

Chocolate Covered Strawberry Day on Thursday, May 27th!

CHOCOLATE COVERED STRAWBERRIES are being featured today, May 27th, in all Dining Services' restaurants!

You already know that strawberries are good for you. They are high in vitamin C, folic acid and fiber. Even chocolate has health benefits; it contains flavonoids, which we believe are good for your heart. And who can deny that sometimes chocolate just makes you feel good! Pairing chocolate with fruit is a good idea because the volume and fiber in fruit helps you to be satisfied with less total chocolate and therefore fewer total calories and less total fat.

Cinco de Mayo Today!

Dining Services celebrated Cinco de Mayo today with special Mexican meals on campus. Plaza Cafe's salsa bar (pictured at right) was awesome.

I love salsa!
I had a carnitas plate with beans, rice, tortilla and several types of salsas.

Today was a bit of a splurge but it was well worth it. There was so much delicious food from which to choose.

Gumbo Challenge 2010!

On Tuesday, February 16th, Dining had a Gumbo Challenge Contest in celebration of Mardi Gras. Five gumbo recipes were entered into the contest, which was hosted by OVT. Students were invited to taste-test all 5 gumbos and rate them on flavor, consistency, and aroma. The winning gumbo, based on ballots submitted by UCSD students, was Tim Kubota's (OVT's food production manager.) Congratulations, Tim!
